The curious absence of class struggle

To keep the pyramid scheme growing, the government admits about a quarter million immigrants per year, which simultaneously widens the wealth gap by putting downward pressure on the wages of average, working Canadians. Posted 05/01/08 at 2:16 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

EchoStar Sharpens Battle Plan

The Dish Network satellite TV provider says it will stick with its $40 a month charge for its most popular programming package until February 2009. The Englewood, Colo., broadcaster also says it will boost its HD video offering to a total of 100 channels during the year.

The move comes as rival DirecTV (DTV - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr), as well as phone giant Verizon (VZ - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr), have taken TV customers away from cable companies like Comcast (CMCSA - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr), Time Warner Cable (TWC - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr) and Cablevision (CVC - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr).

The eroding cable customer base has alarmed investors as they watch subscribers flee to other shops with higher-quality video to get the full bang out of their new flat-panel TVs.

Wagner's Deane stages an unconventional protest

I don't think most coaches need a belt. We've all refereed games in camps coming up, and we know you cannot work a game with someone in your ear."

Seated in a conference room after a recent 64-59 win against St. Francis (N.Y.), there was Deane, unstrapped and unplugged, simply making a request that he believes would better the game. "You want a point of emphasis? Take a look at the plays where a poor foul shooter is being mugged before the inbounds," said Deane, who unbuckled himself and stood on the sideline in the final minute as tensions rose. "That call should have been made, but they shied away. No one wants to call that. There's your point of emphasis."

Gainey wants more from Canadiens on faceoffs

We can't finish games with 30 or 35 per cent of faceoffs won," Gainey said Monday. "If the players here can't solve it, I'll look at adding or replacing a player here with one who can win important faceoffs."

The Canadiens rank 27th in the league with a 48.1 per cent success rate. Detroit leads at 54.3 per cent.

Coach Guy Carbonneau and assistants Kirk Muller and Doug Jarvis are all former centres who were strong in the faceoff circle.

"Carbo works most with us on faceoffs, Kirk also, and we talk with the veteran guys," said checking centre Kyle Chipchura. "As a team, it's something we recognize that we need to improve on."

At the halfway point of the season, Montreal is fifth in the Eastern Conference with a 20-13-8 record.

The Canadiens were three points better at the same point last season, but then went into a swoon that saw them miss the playoffs.

Dream ride to Cape, but a nightmare driving home

It is estimated the plant will emit four to five million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually.

Given the undeniable scientific evidence that man- made emissions of greenhouse gasses are accelerating global warming, such a decision is irresponsible. The South Carolina Legislature should put a moratorium on building any more coal-fired power plants until we have the technology to effectively capture and sequester the carbon dioxide...

It is interesting to note the "Cape Wind" project, which calls for the installation of 130 wind turbines off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, will generate 468 megawatts of power at a cost of $900 million, very similar to the cost per megawatt of Santee Cooper's proposed coal plant. And of course wind turbines do not emit any carbon dioxide... Read the rest of thgis Chaleston Post Courier story here. Leave a comment _____________________________

Sustaining the wind power debate

The Cape Cod Youth Council on Sustainability will host a wind energy forum "for youth, by youth" June 1 from 4 to 6 p.m.
