Even without writers, Leno seems scripted
There have been flashes of a really loose Leno, like when he conducted a freewheeling Q&A session with the audience and shared an anecdote about a girlfriend who didn't move with him to Los Angeles when he was getting started in the business. Those moments remind us that he's a natural-born wit, one that's all too often saddled by the chores of being Mr. Show Biz. But too much of the program reminds us of that "boring old 'Tonight Show.'" For a real high-flying act without a net, check out "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," which is also without its writers. This program would seem to be in the most trouble, since it boasts the best scribes in the business (and finally won an Emmy for it earlier this year), but O'Brien has faced the challenge -- not by trying to re-create the magic of his traditional show, but by truly putting on an improvised, unpredictable show.
Shaq Heads to LA for Medical Help
The San Antonio Spurs on Monday waived swingman DerMarr Johnson and guard Keith Langford, who each spent only two weeks on the roster. Johnson averaged 4 points in 4 minutes after being signed on Dec. 29 to replace draft pick Marcus Williams. A journeyman who played for Atlanta, New York and Denver during a seven-year NBA career, Johnson appeared in three games. Langford, signed Dec. 28 after playing on the Spurs' Development League affiliate, averaged 1 point and 1 rebound in two games. .

Alex Salmond will go down in history as the man who tried (and failed) to split the nation, a historical irrelevance. 2008 will see the SNP reduced to a pathetic, squabbling and infighting rabble. Those whiz kids who will make computers smarter, faster and more useful for everyone. "At a certain level, it's simply a tragedy," says Brad Smith, Microsoft's general counsel. "It's a lost opportunity for the next generation of people growing up in Washington state." Microsoft's warning may sound strange in a region that has thrived from the technology boom of the past 15 years. But Smith says there's no such thing as stability in his business: You're either innovating or falling behind. The industry can turn faster than a Detroit SUV. The sometimes-bumpy boom has created more than 300,000 high-tech jobs statewide, and the big money flowing from those jobs employs hundreds of thousands more in traditional industries. The state estimates there will be nearly 30,000 openings for computer specialists in the next decade, and the technology they create is needed in every industry from fishing to aircraft manufacture.
