Some big mistakes I hope not to make

Otherwise, a personal loan is cheaper than card debt.

Moneyexpert.com says nearly 40% of all bank or building-society current accounts offer an interest-free overdraft limit, and the average amount of free cash can be as high as £3,500. But fewer than half automatically set up an overdraft for customers straying into the red: you have to demand your rights.

Don’t pay bills early or late, but on time. With regular payments, such as credit card or utility bills, you can set up an alert to remind you when to pay – or you can do it yourself.

Check the rates for paying annual bills monthly so you can budget more cleverly and spread the cost. It may pay to borrow and pay it all early, but some firms charge you nothing for putting monthly instalments on direct debit.

Misadventures in Atlanta

I would hope that if he asked me out on a date and let me pick the restaurant that he could afford any place I might suggest and if he couldn't, he needs to do the picking. Thats why, if things are my treat, I make sure I pick somewhere I know I can afford.

Rob Pegoraro

I just haven't spent enough time looking at what's available in this category. Were I shopping for one, I'd probably get what Consumer Reports suggested.

McLean, Va.: Love my iPhone. Wish it had Flash. Why doesn't it? When will the iPhone get Flash? So many websites have flash features embedded that it seems like an inexplicable omission. Was there an Telco reason to omit it? Do Flash items hog bandwidth?

Rob Pegoraro: Flash animations don't take up that much bandwidth, but running Flash does take up a decent amount of memory. I can see why Apple left it out--given the iPhone's limited bandwidth and resources, it's an understandable omission.

(And if that gets sites to stop hiding crucial features behind Flash front-ends, I'm all for it!)

Could you have a No-Car Day?

Or I'd try to get creative with the plastic bags and wind up hitting myself in the jaw with the corner of a box of tissues.

Still, it was nice to know I could get by if I really needed to.

Now that I'm working full time again, No-Car Day doesn't happen nearly as often. What's been good for my personal economy hasn't been as good for the environment – the current job has led to quite a bit more driving, including during my workday, and all kinds of errands get crammed into busier weekends. But, every now and then, a leisurely Sunday comes along — a Sunday like yesterday, in fact — and I realize there's enough food in the fridge and plenty to do around the house, and the car gets to stay indoors all day, just like old times.

Now, my fellow vehicle owners, it's your turn: Do you ever have a No-Car Day? Could you? Would you even want to? What would your rules be? Share your thoughts and stories below.

Grave (stone) robbers?

No one had come forward to claim the grave marker as of Monday afternoon.

Albertville police received a tombstone Friday with the name Joe P. Rogers and the dates 1875-1946. An Internet search proved the tombstone had been removed from the cemetery at the Solitude Baptist Church, on Solitude Road in Albertville.

A third tombstone has remained in the property room of the Albertville Police Department for about three years with no claimants.

The tombstone was prepared for a Rebecca E. King, Nov. 12, 1874-Feb. 14, 1940.

Chiseled into the weathered marker are the words A tender mother and faithful wife.

So far an Internet search has found several possibilities to Kings identity, but further research will be needed, if possible, to determine the correct Rebecca King.

Canfor Pulp Income Fund Announces Third Quarter 2007 Results

Total manufacturing costs improved slightly when compared to the second quarter as higher mill productivity combined with lower energy, maintenance and operating costs offset an increase in fibre costs. Fibre costs increased 4% as a result of higher whole log chip deliveries. The Partnership increased the volume of whole log chipping in the quarter in order to increase chip inventories to mitigate the potential impact of future sawmill curtailments. The third quarter 2007 results are lower than those in the same period a year ago, when sales were $213.6 million with net income of $41.9 million ($0.59 per unit), primarily due to the impact of the stronger Canadian dollar and fibre costs, which more than offset increases in NBSK pulp list prices.

During the quarter, the Partnership adopted newly issued guidance by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants on the calculation of standardized distributable cash.
